A usual morning in India

A usual morning in India

Just another usual morning in India.

We wake up, sip hot tea, and scroll through our phone.

We find social media burning over a heart-wrenching case of a 19-year-old girl, who had been brutally gang-raped a fortnight ago in Hathras. The girl who was left with a broken spine and slit tongue by the rapists was no more. But the public outrage wasn’t merely for the rape and her death, it was more about the way UP police had put her dead body to ashes overnight.

The tea in our favorite, customized mug suddenly turns bitter. The news leaves us shocked and furious.

That very moment we too type a post on social media. Spitting venom over crippled law and order. We curse the corrupt police officials and demand justice for the poor deceased girl.

Just another usual morning in India.

It was just yesterday when the entire nation was lamenting over Manisha and today, we wake up to two similar heinous acts reported in different parts of the country. After all, it’s just another usual morning in India…

As per the National Crime Record Bureau’s report, in 2019 India recorded an average of 87 rape cases in a day. However, we are well aware that this is just the partial picture, as in India the majority of rape cases are not even reported due to reasons like societal/family pressure and social stigma.

Nirbhaya’s case, which was one of the most brutal of its kind. Where the judiciary was under enormous public pressure and which had clear evidence against rapists, took SEVEN long years to be brought to justice!
