How to build your career in the financial market

Talking about careers in the financial market, there are endless opportunities in every sphere. We all know about Investment Banking, Equity Research, and Financial Analysis, but careers in Capital Markets is also one such arena which offers many rewarding options.

The Indian education system has sidelined financial markets as a subject altogether. This is one of the reasons why most of the students are not conscious of the prominent and elite career opportunities present in the scope of the financial markets.

In the recent decade, a shortage of trained professionals in the financial market has prompted the need for specialized professionals in various verticals ranging from stock traders to venture capital analysts.

The financial markets in India are in the growth phase, and there is a need for trained professionals, the industry is running out of talented individuals and young minds, the industry needs much more professionals than it currently has. Most of the available talent pool does not have a specialization or proper understanding of financial markets and we need to bridge this gap.

The stock market, which is a component of a financial market, getting bigger every day, and opportunities for employment in the stock market are growing rapidly. It is a place full of enormous opportunity and people from all backgrounds whether science, commerce, or arts, are showing a lot of interest in pursuing their career in the stock markets.

The market has the potential to offer career opportunities from an entry-level position like Equity Advisor or Relationship Manager to the setting up Entrepreneurial Venture through offering services like Registered Investment Advisors, market intermediaries, useful platforms that provide key information for market participants, etc.

Most people believe that a career in the stock market is only for people with finance or business background. But this is not true. Do not stop yourself from entering into the exciting world of the stock market just because you do not have a finance degree.

A lot of financial companies hire employees from all backgrounds, and in this era of technology, new-age financial companies are looking for the skills and the aptitude of the candidates rather than just the degree. Nonetheless, having or not having a finance degree is just the starting point.

Qualification required making a career in the financial market:

  • Graduation from any recognized university
  • Easy and quick short-term certificates without any essential educational degree allow exploring different avenues
  • The certifying authority for these courses is NISM, which are nationally recognized certification mandatory for various professionals in financial markets in India. Anyone who wants to know the fundamentals of companies and has some basic interest in Indian financial market can go for these courses
  • NISM Certifications can expose you to a plethora of different fields of knowledge within the financial markets.
  • You can choose from the different types of derivatives, investment advice, risk management, and other wide-ranging subjects. Individuals aspiring to enter the financial services industry in India have better prospects if they first get these certifications. Once you complete the course, you can make an entry into the financial market as a trainee and proceeds depending on your interest
  • Whereas, an MBA in finance or capital markets is generic and essentially a study in financial markets, corporate finance, and portfolio management, with an emphasis on equity, bonds, foreign exchange, and their various derivatives markets. These specializations which help one in charting a rewarding career path in the world of stocks and investments. However, as a standalone course, an MBA is not particularly useful as it touches upon the surface and does not have enough depth that is required to pursue a career.
